The coronavirus pandemic has taken a horrible toll on American jobs over the past four months. One terrific way to support American jobs is to purchase items made in our country. According to the Federal Trade Commission, “Made in USA” means that ‘all or virtually all’ of a product has been made in America. All significant parts, and processing and labor, must be of U.S. origin. Here are 3 reasons to buy products made in the USA:
1. “Made in USA” implies excellent craftsmanship and a superior product. Purchasing imported products offers no quality guarantee. Slightly higher prices for American-made goods are justified because the items will last longer and be of higher quality.
2. Supporting local businesses strengthens local communities, which in turn reinforces the strength of our country. When Americans invest in American-made products, more money goes into manufacturing those (and additional) products. This in turn creates more jobs and additional investment opportunities for Americans.
3. Our federal and local governments can control working conditions, ensure minimum wages are paid, and ensure proper laws are upheld for American workers. We don’t have that control and transparency for imported goods. Buying foreign products may support labor practice violations for workers abroad.
At Best Vac in St. Charles, owner Ron Vohs ensures that over 80% of the products Best Vac sells are made in the USA or in Germany, another country known for high quality products and fair labor practices. “In many big box stores, up to 80% of the products they sell are made in China,” explained Vohs. “Best Vac overwhelmingly sells and supports domestic products. American companies we support include Austin Air Purifiers, M.D. Central Vacuum Systems, Riccar Upright Vacuums (R10, R30, and R40 Series models), Vacguys Cleaning Products, Freshwave Odor Removing Products, Kalamazoo Candles, Meliora Cleaning Products, and Wool Shop Dusters.”
